When a person dies, a grant of representation (either a grant of probate or letters of administration) is often needed to allow the personal representatives to deal with the estate of the deceased. If the person who has died left a will, the executors named in the will have to apply to the court for a grant of probate to be able to administer their estate. The grant is the official document that allows the executor to gather the assets of the deceased and distribute them according to the wishes contained within the will.
